Hi Andy,
other than scientific papers, the MonetDB website and the code itself, there is no further documentation. For concrete and specific questions, please use the developers (or users) mailing list.
Beware, though, that changing MonetDB storage (plain C arrays), requires also changing the code of every operator that handles data.
