Hi, I know Monetdb works with aqua studio,sql view. But if you are working with eclipse it is nice to have a plugin that talks to monetdb. I have just came across http://eclipsesql.sourceforge.net/. It looks really nice and is jdbc compliant. There is a standalone version as well if you dont use eclipse. [MonetDB-users] Database backup/restore

Hi, I am trying to test the backup/restore of a MonetDB database. I installed MonetDB latest version on a 32Bit Red hat Linux. I created a database on Machine-1, created a table and loaded the table with 1M rows. After that I shutdown the database and took a back-up of the entire "dbfarm" directory. I moved the backup to Machine-2 where the "dbfarm" directory points to the similar location as Machine-1. I then opened the database on Machine-2 but there is no table/data on Machine2 even though the directory contents between the 2 machines appear the same. Please let me know if I am missing something. I also made sure that Machine-2 is not creating the database in any other location, except the location where I copied all the files. The idea here is to create the database on one machine and then move the database to different machine using simple file system COPY. Thanks, - Venks

[MonetDB-users] Introducing the Merovingian: a MonetDB 5 database keeper

Hi all, I'd like to bring a little program to your attention that may or may not be useful to you: merovingian. Merovingian is meant as end-user program to start and stop one or more MonetDB databases. The program allows itself to be naturally used into start and stop scripts, as well as manual use from the console. It is aimed at MonetDB5/SQL users. In short, merovingian performs two basic tasks: 1. handle connections from clients and redirect those connections to the appropriate mserver process, and 2. start an mserver process in case it is not running (any more). Currently, an appropriate mserver process is defined by the database a client requests for. Since each mserver process only serves one database, multiple mserver processes are necessary to deal with multiple databases. Because merovingian can start mserver processes on demand, it has the potential to (attempt to) restart an mserver after it has crashed. Since merovingian will (currently only) start mserver processes, output of those processes might get confusing, especially when multiple servers are started. Also, interacting with them is non-trivial. For this reason, merovingian starts mserver processes as daemon processes in the background and catches their outputs to display it in a log-like fashion. Distinction is made between messages and errors. Not surprisingly both outputs can be written to a logfile on disk or just outputted to the console. Pre-starting databases can be important when clients are used that do not request for a specific database. In such case, the client is redirected to the first database that is running at that moment. Please look at the Merovingian section in the etc/monetdb5.conf file for more options for merovingian. The section is still small, but it might grow. Merovingian is available in the development branch (CVS head) of the MonetDB5 repository. Feedback is welcome.

Hi, I'm trying to using connection pooling in MonetDB (version 5) via Apache Commons-dbcp, but there is some error during the connectrion to MonetDB, message that I get from log file is as the following : Caused by: org.apache.commons.dbcp.SQLNestedException: Cannot get a connection, pool exhausted ...... Caused by: java.util.NoSuchElementException: Could not create a validated object, cause: writable mode not supported ... 64 more Can anyone show me the correct way to implement connection pooling with MonetDB ? Or it is not supported in the current release of MonetDB ? Beside, I also found that the aliased columns not recognized after "group by... order by", my SQL statement could as the following... SELECT name AS n FROM students ORDER BY name; And the error message I get was ORDER BY: no such column "name". Hello, I have some troubles to add documents to the specific collection with pf:add-doc(string uri, string documentName, string collectionName), here's what I tried : pf:add-doc("c://bib.xml","bib.xml","myCollection") <> pf:add-doc("c://book.xml","book.xml","myCollection") <> pf:add-doc("c://helloworld.xml","helloworld.xml","myCollection") <> I allways have the same error message : ERROR: __shred_into_docBAT:bat(old_10000000XX_qn_nid) does not exist!!!! with XX two numbers which change. Note that it only happens the third time I decide to add a document to a specific collection (weird is'n't it?) it means that I tried to add several documents with only one command (as it is shown in the tutorial) and I managed to put 3 documents in the collection, even one more and then I get the same error (the third time I add documments). I work on V4.18.0 from the download page MonetDB4-XQuery-i686-0.18.2.msi, windows platform. I first ran the commands through java interface but I got the same results with the MapiClient. Has anyone the same problems? Am I doing someting wrong? Thanks for your help.

[MonetDB-users] BAT Memory Usage

Hello everyone, We are evaluating Monet right now to store and analyze a huge quantity of data. We have several facts collection that range from 1 million row, 200 cols. to way over 300 million rows and over 10.000 columns. We are aware of memory limitations of current Monet version and looking forward to the new one but in the meantime we'd like to do some performance and load tests. In order to know which data we will be able to store, we need to know how much memory will use a BAT depending on the datatype and the number of elements we want to store in it. Is there a lineal relation between those variables (ie. 8 bytes oid, 8 bytes int => 16 bytes per element) or do Monet encode data using intervals or such? Hi, I am thinking of storing images and video files in monetdb. I have come across user defined types like url. Is it worth defining custom types for images and video files or can i just use blob instead. I know the types come in handy from the usage point of view but from the storage and performance does it matter to monetdb?
