Installing libreadline-dev (which for some reason was missing), deleting everything in the build directory, and then bootstrap, config, make, make-installing again (using clone of the mercurial repository) worked. If your output doesn't show the "support for command-line editing compiled-in" line, it means you didn't have readline available when installing.
