MonetDB is useful for read-mostly applications like data warehousing/OLAP and such where you're often looking to summarize your data in bulk as opposed to OLTP where you have lots of single row inserts, point lookups and updates. Basically stuff like: SELECT country, SUM(sales) FROM sales WHERE sale_date > '2005-01-01' GROUP BY country MonetDB is a column store not entirely unlike Vertica, LucidDB or Infobright.
